Ok this spot is underrated for sure. The pastrami fries are some of the best ones I've ever had. Get the grilled onions on it! So good. Regular size portion is huge, a great bang for your buck. Highly recommend you stop by for lunch. Quick and friendly service.

I love the strawberry banana smoothies here... They are delicious and nutritious and most importantly delicious! They are not made from dairy and they are reasonably priced also. This place has great customer service also and they are super friendly and down-to-earth. It has a great ambience also with exquisite clientele.

California Steak & Fries

California Steak & Fries is the kind of place you stumble into once and end up making a habit out of. Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles at 3745 La Brea Ave, this cozy diner blends West Coast casual with hearty Midwest flavor, becoming a neighborhood staple for steak lovers and fry fanatics alike.

A local favorite for steak lovers in Los Angeles

Tucked between bustling streets and quiet neighborhoods, California Steak & Fries is more than just a place to eat — it’s a local go-to where people come for comfort food that hits all the right notes. The steak is juicy and cooked to order, whether you’re in the mood for a thick-cut sirloin or something leaner like a tender flat iron. Fries, the perfect partner to every meat-lover's dream, come in styles that range from classic to loaded with toppings.

It’s not a white-tablecloth kind of steakhouse — and that’s exactly the charm. The vibe here is laid-back, with friendly staff and the kind of casual energy that makes it feel like you’re grabbing a bite at a friend’s place. Locals swear by their ribeye sandwich, and if you’re new in town, don’t be surprised if someone recommends it before you even get to the counter.

A menu built around flavor, simplicity, and satisfaction

There’s something personal about the way California Steak & Fries builds its menu — it’s straightforward but never boring. Each plate is packed with purpose. The main draw, of course, is the variety of steak options: ribeye, New York strip, skirt steak — all grilled just the way you like. But what keeps people coming back is the attention to detail. Whether it’s the buttery garlic spread on the sandwich buns or the crispy, golden-brown perfection of the seasoned French fries, everything has its place.

Beyond the staples, you’ll find comforting sides like creamed spinach, mac and cheese, and even a spicy slaw that adds a punch to the plate. And yes, they’ve got salads for those trying to keep it light — but you’re here for the steak, let’s be honest.

What makes the experience even more memorable is that nothing feels mass-produced. The meat is locally sourced, the cuts are generous, and the quality control is clearly a priority. It’s the kind of spot where the kitchen crew knows their regulars and the manager actually walks out to ask how your food was. You don’t get that everywhere.

From a quick bite to a late-night craving, it just works

What makes California Steak & Fries stand out in LA’s ever-growing list of eateries is that it knows its identity. You’re not coming here for a 10-page menu or experimental cuisine. You come here when you want a great steak and crispy fries — fast, hot, and exactly how you remember it from last time.

Open until late, it caters to everyone from lunch-break diners to late-night stragglers looking for something solid after a long day. And don’t worry about parking — they’ve got enough spots, a rarity in Los Angeles.

Another plus? Their location on La Brea Ave puts them in a sweet spot — accessible from West Adams, Baldwin Hills, and even folks driving down from Hollywood. And while the interior isn’t flashy, it’s warm and familiar. Think booths, framed food photos, and the kind of clean, no-frills decor that just works.

What customers are really saying

If you dig through online reviews, the pattern is easy to spot — people don’t just love the food, they love how consistent it is. One regular mentioned he’s been coming for over three years and has never had a cold fry or overcooked steak. Others talk about the friendly team behind the counter and how they always remember your name after just a few visits.

Google and Yelp both show strong ratings, with mentions of their house sauce (yes, it’s addictive) and generous portions. One reviewer even called it “the In-N-Out of steak joints,” and honestly, that’s not far off.

If there’s one critique, it’s that the place can get crowded during peak hours — but that only speaks to how many people rely on it for their comfort food fix. Pro tip? Call ahead or go slightly off-hour if you’re trying to avoid the line.
